INDOT prepares Miami County residents for traffic change

U.S. 31 is going to be restricted at the intersection of Blair Pike Road/West Division Road in Miami County on or after May 15 due to construction.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the construction is slated to last up to two weeks and is going to strengthen the shoulders along U.S. 31 for the upcoming bridge rehabilitation project. Drivers won’t be able to access U.S. 31 from Blair Pike/West Division roads or access Blair Pike/West Division from U.S. 31.

The projected start date for the bridge rehabilitation project is mid-to-late June and is going to require the restriction of U.S. 31 down to one lane in each direction.

“INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through any active work zone,” said an INDOT press release. “Drivers should also be prepared for stopped traffic.”

Indianapolis police arrest protesters blocking traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police have arrested several people who blocked a street outside the Statehouse as part of a nonviolent protest against poverty, racism and other issues.

Members of the Indiana Poor People’s campaign blocked Capitol Avenue before the arrests Monday afternoon.

WISH-TV and WRTV-TV report at least 14 people were arrested. Police made scores of similar arrests in Missouri, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.

The Indiana’s Poor People Campaign is a state version of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. It’s also a renewed version of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign five decades ago to lift Americans out of poverty. Protest and events were planned in at least 30 states and the nation’s capital on Monday.
