Dutch Cafe building purchased

The owners of the Dutch Cafe expand their horizons with the purchase of the building and its adjacent property on US 31 near Bunker Hill.

The restaurant, owned and operated by Wilbur and Norma Jess, has been in the Jess family for more than 11 years, said a Dutch Cafe press release.

The release also said the establishment has been a staple along U.S. 31 at Grissom Air Reserve Base and Grissom Aeroplex for some time.

“In the 11 years Wilbur and Norma Jess have owned and operated the Dutch Cafe, they doubled its size to seat 200 and employ 40 people,” said the release.

It wasn’t until recently the Jess family acquired the land around the business with help from First Farmers Bank & Trust and Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corporation, who presented them with a U.S. Small Business Administration 504 small business loan.

“Indiana Statewide CDC works with local Indiana lenders to issue SBA 504 loans to help owners of expanding or startup small businesses buy real estate, buildings and equipment,” said the release.

According to the press release, the loan’s purpose is to help small businesses like the Dutch Cafe “gain favorable financing terms similar to those available to large companies in conventional loans.”

“The 504 program funds part of the loan which reduces the bank’s exposure,” according to Michael Kuhn of First Farmers Bank & Trust. “Wilbur and Norma Jess have a good, profitable business and they were able to get a low down payment and long-term, fixed interest rate.”

According to the release, Wilbur and Norma Jess are now the owners of not only the Dutch Cafe building, but seven and a half acres of real estate which include the building, an outdoor special events venue and a pond.

“Wilbur Jess says, ‘The SBA loan is very good for us,’” said the release.

The Dutch Cafe is open Monday through Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
