Stabbed inmate remains in hospital

BY Paige Conley - pconley@perutribune.com

An inmate at the Miami County Correctional Facility who was the victim of a stabbing on May 29 is expected to make a recovery.

The inmate, identified by Indiana State Police as Arthur Andrews, 27, of Indianapolis, was reportedly stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate with a homemade knife.

“At approximately 12:51 p.m., staff at the Miami Correctional Facility responded to a stabbing in the prison’s B Housing Unit, in which an inmate was severely injured,” said an ISP press release.

Andrews was flown to an Indianapolis Hospital where he is in the intensive care unit. The extent of his injuries weren’t released, but ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Slocum said Andrews did undergo surgery.

“He had to have his gall bladder removed,” Slocum said.

Andrews is currently recovering and is expected to live, according to Slocum.

Andrews was reportedly stabbed in the chest/torso area, according to the Miami County Correctional Facility, which released its own statement regarding the incident.

“After stabilizing procedures were initiated by first responders, the offender was life-lined to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis where he is considered in critical, but stable condition,” MCF said in the statement.

Warden Bill Hyatt praised the responsive efforts of his staff.

“The custody officers initially involved, along with those who subsequently responded and medical staff handled life-threatening issue with professionalism, efficiency, and, most importantly, as a team,” Hyatt said. “I am very proud of their efforts.”

The investigation is being handled by the Indiana State Police who are in the middle of speaking with witnesses and reviewing tapes at this time.

“When all of that is done, we’ll forward it to the prosecutor’s office,” Slocum said.

There have been no suspects released at this time nor any information behind why Andrews was stabbed. The case is still under investigation.
