A period of heavy rain Tuesday afternoon nearly washed out the entire Cal Ripken tournament lineup in Miami County.

The fields at Bunker Hill were deemed unplayable for Tuesday night’s 12u games, necessitating a change in schedule.

Mike Thayer, Bunker Hill 12u coach, said the pool games will still finish by Friday ahead of bracket play over the weekend.

“The delay won’t change things too much,” Thayer said. “We had a team forfeit and we had two holes on Friday so we’ll be finishing pool play on schedule.

“Starting Saturday, we’ll have two bracket games start around noon and two more around 4 p.m. with the championship game on Sunday, though we don’t have the official times for all the games yet.”

The original games to be played Tuesday, which included Peru against Russiaville and Bunker Hill against Southside at 5:30 p.m. and Mishawaka against Taylor at 8 p.m. were played Wednesday instead.

Wednesday’s originally scheduled game between Logansport and South Bend Eastside was moved back to 8 p.m.

Bunker Hill’s game against Taylor, which was scheduled for an 8 p.m. start Wednesday, will now be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. UCT (Kokomo) and Russiaville, which was scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., will also play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Peru will now play Northwestern at 8 p.m. Thursday with Mishawaka and Southside, originally scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., now playing at 8 p.m. as well Thursday.

Friday has four games on the schedule as the Peru versus Northside and Logansport versus Kokomo Eastside games scheduled for Thursday will be moved to Friday at 8 p.m.

The originally scheduled Friday games, which include UCT against Northside and Northwestern against Russiaville, remain unchanged and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Rain also nearly knocked out the single game scheduled at the Peru 11u Cal Ripken tournament between Bunker Hill and Southside.

Thanks to the efforts of several individuals, which the Peru Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth page noted as Jason Boswell, Alex Dicken and Eric Isenburg, the field at West City Park was made ready to play.

Isenberg, the 11u Bunker Hill coach, said it took quite a bit of work to get the field in playable condition.

“We worked on the field for an hour and a half to get it ready,” Isenberg said. “It was underwater pretty good after the rain earlier.”

In the game, Bunker Hill dropped a close 10-9 decision to Southside, running the team’s record to 0-2 in at the Peru tournament.

Isenberg said the performance overall was better after a slow start on Sunday.

“We put the ball in play a little better Tuesday,” Isenberg said. “The kids played hard and played well in a close game but we just didn’t get the plays to go our way in the finish.

“The kids are having fun, doing their best and we’re happy with what they’ve done. We’ve seen a lot of improvement since starting practice three weeks ago and everyone is enjoying themselves out there.”

Bunker Hill closed out group play Wednesday night against Auburn. Pool play at Peru concludes Thursday night.
