A fire Friday evening in the McClure’s south gas station location at 276 S. Broadway Ave. resulted in patrons being evacuated from the building while firefighters from the Peru Fire Department worked to extinguish the flames.

The fire department, dispatched at 5:37 p.m., arrived on scene and found the source of the fire to be coming from the gas stations bathroom.

According to PFD Fire Investigator Rich Ashley, firefighters were able to contain the fire in the bathroom resulting in no injuries and only some smoke damage to the store.

As far as to who or what caused the fire, Ashley is still conducting an investigation and needs to speak with persons of interest in the case.

He said he’s also waiting on the video footage from the gas station to see what might have happened around the time the fire started.

“We’ve got a preliminary thought of what might have happened,” Ashley said. “We still want to talk to a few people before we make any further determination.”

In addition to the fire, the McClure’s assistant store manager requested assistance from the Peru Police Department around 1:00 a.m. the next morning in regards to people taking food items from the gas station’s dumpster.

“The assistant store manager advised that due to the fire today all the food items have been contaminated,” stated information from the PPD’s Calls for Service.

The manager requested the incident be documented and PPD gave their assistance.
