Kokomo man killed in Miami Co. crash

BY Paige Conley - pconley@perutribune.com

A Kokomo man was killed in a single vehicle crash Friday morning after he was ejected from the vehicle near Ind. 218 East and Strawtown Pike.

According to a Miami County Sheriff’s Department crash report, the 2006 Saturn Ion driven by Isaiah Berry, 18, Kokomo was traveling eastbound on Ind. 218 in the area of 111 West Ind. 218 when the vehicle left the south side of the roadway.

The vehicle reportedly continued sideways through the grass and hit a stump before it overturned and was sent airborne. The vehicle eventually rested on its wheels without Berry, who had been ejected from the vehicle at some point during the incident, according to the report.

There was no indication as to how far Berry’s body landed from the vehicle.

Berry was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger Brandon Doudy, 21, Kokomo was transported to the hospital for internal injuries.

At the time of press, the extent of Doudy’s injuries were unknown.

Law enforcement is still unsure about what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, but deputies have their theories.

“It appears speed was probably a factor,” said MCSD Sergeant Tyler Jenkins.

In addition to speed, Jenkins doesn’t believe either occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which is expected to have played a large role in Berry’s ejection.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
