Phyllis Joan McNary March 24, 1925 - Sept. 5, 2018

Phyllis Joan McNary, 93, of Peru passed away on Sept. 5, 2018. She was born on March 24, 1925, to Herbert E. and Grace A. (Miller) Petty. Phyllis worked at Montgomery Ward Catalog and the office of William T. Wallace Mfg., Co after she graduated from Peru High School in 1943. She was married to Rodney A. McNary on Dec. 21, 1945.

She accepted Christ into her life and was baptized on March 28, 1937. Phyllis was a member of First Christian Church in Peru. She was very active and served in various church and Sunday school ministries. She served as a lay member of Peru Rolling Chapel. Recently, she had been attending Chapel Ministries Outreach with her daughter and family.

Over the years she enjoyed many memorable motorcycle touring trips with her husband Rod. She loved Bible studies and Christian retreats. Phyllis was an avid reader and enjoyed watching birds at all of her bird feeders. The closeness of her family was a cherished treasure as well. She was always positive and an encouragement to anyone she was around. She was a very tiny and petite woman with an enormous giving heart.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Rodney, sister Norma Jean Thurston, brother Donald Petty and great-nephew Steve Oxford.

Phyllis is survived by son David L. McNary, Peru; daughter Dawn (Mike) Shropshire, Peru; grandson Ben (Ashlee) Shropshire; great-grandsons Corbin and Broden Shropshire, Mexico, Indiana; niece Dee (Kent) Ayres, Mount Juliet, Tennessee; nephew Bruce (Karen) Thurston, Santa Monica, California; great-niece Kari Oxford, Greenfield; great-nephew Chris Oxford, Lafayette.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peru Rolling Chapel, P.O. Box 656, Peru, Indiana, 46970; AWANA Ministries at First Christian Church, 53 W. Main St., Peru, Indiana, 46970; AWANA Ministries at East Pointe Bible Church, P.O. Box 1192, Peru, Indiana, 46970; or Chapel Ministries Outreach Resort for Women, 3054 W. 400 N., Peru, Indiana, 46970.

The family would like to thank Miller’s Merry Manor for their gentle care and concern and Premiere Hospice Care.

Arrangements have been made by Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. As previously planned by Phyllis and late husband Rodney, her body will be donated to the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis for research in order that others may live.

There will be a celebration of life at Chapel Ministries Outreach at 3054 W. 400 N., Peru, Indiana, 46970 on Sept. 18, 2018, at 6 p.m.
