Miami County teen found shot

Brian Powers - bpowers@perutribune.com

Representatives of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a Miami County teenager after receiving a dispatch call Sunday morning, according to an MCSO press release.

The call, which came in at approximately 7:18 a.m. Sunday, reportedly referenced that someone had been shot and killed at the unknown caller’s residence.

According to the press release, deputies arrived at the residence on the 3100 block of North Mexico Road and found the body of 18-year-old Nathan Joe Hopper, who had died of an apparent gunshot wound. Hopper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Mike Rogers, of the MCSO, said the investigation is ongoing and in its early stages.

Rogers could not confirm whether Hopper’s death has been ruled a homicide, and could only confirm the teenager had been shot.

“To release any information at this time would damage the integrity of our investigation,” Rogers said. “It is a shooting, but we’re not prepared to release any other information at this time.”

Rogers said more information will be released “at an appropriate time.”

Miami County Coroner John Boyer mirrored Rogers’ position, saying there was no information available for release as yet.

“It’s being investigated by several different agencies,” Boyer said.

According to the press release, the investigation is being conducted by multiple agencies, including the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, the Miami County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana State Police.
