Morris trial set for November

BY Brian Powers - bpowers@perutribune.com

Jonesboro teenager Brittany Morris had her trial dates set for her accused role in the May 2018 murder of 22-year-old Summitville man Drake Smith. Morris, now 18, was 17 when she was reportedly part of luring the victim to an area where he was attacked and beaten to death by 21-year-old Marion native Joshua Kean and 23-year-old Lafontaine resident Ethan Cain.

Cain and Kean were found in California days after the murder of Smith and extradited back to Miami County to stand trial for the crimes they are accused of.

Morris’ attorneys Eric Huneryager and Kristina Lynn appeared via video conference yesterday morning, along with Miami County Prosecutor Jeff Sinkovics.

Morris also appeared via video call from the Miami County Jail, but said nothing.

Huneryager asked Miami County Circuit Court Judge Tim Spahr for another pretrial hearing in 60 days, as well as an October trial date.

Spahr asked how much time would be needed for the trial, to which Sinkovics requested two weeks of court time.

After going through calendars, all parties agreed on November trial dates, from Nov. 4, 6-8 and 12-15. Another pretrial hearing was set for May 23 at 8:30 a.m. as well.

The other two suspects of Smith’s murder will also be having separate jury trials.

On March 9, Kean had his trial dates set in August of this year, and Cain is slated to appear in court for his next pretrial hearing on April 25.
