Adult education offering free course

Brian Powers - bpowers@perutribune.com

Miami County’s adult education program is looking to offer eight county residents the chance of taking a Certified Production Technology course entirely free of charge, through various grants and state-funded programs.

According to a press release from the program, the courses are nationally certified and is geared toward manufacturing.

“This course will provide students and workers the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for for an advanced, high performance manufacturing environment,” the release stated.

The nine week course will be structured into four parts consisting of a certification in safety, quality practices and measurement, manufacturing productions and processes, and maintenance awareness; a soft skill instruction; improvement in computer skills; and the development of machine operation skills through computer-based simulation.

Adult Education Instructor Susan Shannon said those who attend will not only get to take part in the course, but will also be given a bolt meter, a set of calipers and a $25 gas card to help them get to and from sessions.

“The gas cards are available through an adult education grant throughout the region,” Shannon said. “The training comes from the state.”

Courses will be held at South Peru School and will be Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. during its duration.

Prospective students only need internet access (also available at Peru Public Library) and up to a 10th grade level of knowledge. No high school diploma is required.

According to Shannon, the most important quality in a desired student is a commitment to finish the program.

“If a student signs up, we want them to go all the way through the course,” she said.

Classes will start once all eight seats have been filled, so Shannon recommends acting quickly. Those interested may call Miami County Adult Education at 475-2423 for more information on how to enroll.
