Second Saturday hits its stride as summer gets rolling

BY JARED KEEVER - jkeever@perutribune.com

Visitors and residents headed to downtown Peru for the first day of the weekend will be walking into a heavy schedule of activity.

With signs and notices all around town, it likely goes without saying that the Cole Porter festival is happening, and will be, through Sunday afternoon.

But the start of the weekend also marks the second farmers’ market of the season, which will take place every Saturday until the end of September between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in front of the Miami County Museum.

It is also this month’s “Second Saturday,” the monthly evening of activity that highlights local businesses in the downtown area.

That’s a lot to do, but it’s not entirely by design.

“We are pretty packed in June,” Kassi Kotkoski told the Tribune on Friday.

Kotkoski is the marketing director for Rediscover Downtown Peru, the organization behind the Second Saturdays.

In its second year, the organized evening of activities and discounts was meant to help revitalize the downtown area by drawing people in and highlighting what there is to do.

Many of this month’s activities and specials center around the Cole Porter Festival, with Porter-themed giveaways or products for sale.

But, as always, there is also a “kid’s corner” near Fifth Street with free activities for younger residents.

Kotkoski said it is all offered – from 5 to 9 p.m. – in the hope of getting younger families and others to the center of town to see what there is to do, maybe stay for dinner and encourage a sense of pride in the community.

And, given this month’s full slate of things to do, it may just be working.

Kotkoski said a lot of that might have to do with the weather – which is best during the area’s “sweet spot” between June and October.

Whether that’s it, or the Rediscover organization’s efforts paying off, Kotkoski said she will take it.

“Any kind of growth is wonderful and we are happy to see it,” she said.
