Peru man charged with burglary

by Andrew Maciejewski - amaciejewski@chronicle-tribune.com

Police arrested a Miami County man after locating items reported stolen, including a .223 caliber rifle, a Mark-90 rifle, a high-capacity magazine and a chainsaw.

Eric Reeves Altman is facing a Level 4 felony charge of burglary and a misdemeanor charge of theft after police say Altman illegally entered a home in July of this year.

Altman reportedly told police he was borrowing the items from the victim and that he had permission to enter the home anytime he wanted, but police say he later confessed to using a hidden key to access the home.

A juvenile provided a recorded statement to investigators saying he recently purchased an AK-47 rifle from Altman off Facebook along with the high-capacity magazine, according to a probable cause affidavit. The item was recovered and matched the serial number provided by the homeowner, according to police.

The affidavit states that Altman allegedly traded the stolen goods for drugs.

The items stolen were valued at approximately $500.

Someone made contact with police to report seeing Altman go to the residence three times on July 17, 2019, saying he witnessed Altman take a chainsaw.

Altman’s pretrial conference is scheduled for Nov. 11 at 8:30 a.m. in Miami County Circuit Court.

Bond is set at $40,000, according to court records.
