Doris Ann 'Dot' Mays Feb. 2, 1928 - Oct. 28, 2019

Doris Ann “Dot” Mays, 91, of Onward, passed away at 4:25 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2019, at North Woods Commons in Kokomo.

Born Feb. 2, 1928, in Kokomo, she was the daughter of the late Jay Frank Henley and Eva G. (Conover) Orem.

Dot was a 1946 graduate of Kokomo High School.

On July 3, 1954, in Kokomo, she was married to Paul Mays. He preceded her in death May 3, 2004.

From Jan. 1955 – Jan. 1985, Dot worked for the United States Postal Service as Onward’s Postmaster. In 1969, the Indiana Division of the National Postmasters presented Dot with a Commendation Award. Dot was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed sewing formals and costumes for the many Postmaster conventions she attended over the years.

Dot was a longtime member of Onward Christian Church. She was also active in the Ladies Auxilary of the Onward Volunteer Fire Department and the Gay Niter’s Extension Homemakers club. She and her late husband Paul loved working in their 50’ x 100’ foot vegetable garden making sure to share their harvest with family and friends.

Dot and Paul loved to travel. They enjoyed thrill of the open road on their Harley motorcycle. In later years, they traveled with their Avion travel club. Paul, as a pilot and co-oawner of an airplane, enjoyed flying Dot on fly-ins for breakfast all over the state. The couple also enjoyed winters in Florida.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Dot was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert E. Orem, Richard H. Orem, and Wendell “Jay” Orem.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Doris “Dot” Mays will be held 12 p.m. noon on Monday, Nov. 4 at the Onward Christian Church with Rod Mason officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mays Cemetery, Onward.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. Monday until noon at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Onward Christian Church or a favorite charity of the donor’s choice.
