Miami County officials wasted no time Monday to respond to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s executive order telling Hoosiers to stay home during the coronavirus outbreak.

Holcomb during an early afternoon address announced the order in the hopes of slowing the spread of the virus and reducing the number of patients admitted to hospitals statewide.

“Stay at home,” he said,” “unless you are going out on an essential errand or essential work or essential business.”

The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. tonight and will remain so until 11:59 p.m. on April 6. It can be extended if necessary.

By 2 p.m. Monday, the Miami County Commissioners Alan Hunt, Larry West, and Fred Musselman had called an emergency meeting to respond.

In a series of two motions they agreed to pay employees impacted by the order and designated which county offices were deemed “non-essential.” Their votes closed the offices for planning and zoning, county surveyor, veterans services, assessor and applied to county employees at the Purdue extension office and Soil and Water Conservation District Office as well.

It was the second emergency meeting called in a week for the commissioners who had already closed the courthouse to the public, but had left offices open for employees to continue to conduct business by phone and email.

Currently the only members of the public allowed into the courthouse during the shutdown are those scheduled for an in-person hearing with the courts.

At a meeting on Friday, commissioners voted to extend the courthouse closure through April 20 and to provide an extra two weeks of sick time to employees who might be forced home if they started having flu-like symptoms during that closure.

Employees who were able to work from home were already doing so a result of earlier meetings.

“If you can work from home, you should,” Commissioner Larry West said during Monday’s meeting. “I guess we are restressing it at this point.”
