Alice Margaret Dawalt, 79, of Peru, passed away at 4:00 P.M., Sunday, January 3, 2021 at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland on June 27, 1941, the daughter of Thomas and Josephine (Hatch) Meaney. A Newfoundland native, Alice graduated high school at the age of 15 while she lived in a lighthouse and a developed a fondness for lighthouses. She went to Littledale University.

Alice was a waitress at Harvey Hinklemyers for more than 20 years, where she was crowned the “Best Waitress Ever”. She cared deeply about her coworkers and customers. She was a member of the Catholic Church but also attended the Denver UMC and the Peoria UMC. A devoted mother and grandmother, Alice enjoyed spending time with family and friends and relished going to softball and basketball games. She always made everyone she came in contact with feel extra special and she made you feel like an “adopted” member of the family. A member of the Red Hat Society, she also was an avid card player and thrived on correcting bad grammer. Alice was a joy to be around and a true giver in every sense. She was humble, generous, smart, funny and sassy, giving all of which demonstrated in her daily words and actions.
